A Definition
A video game is a game that involves interaction with a user interface to generate visual feedback on a video device. The input device normally used to manipulate video games is called a game controller, which varies across platforms. The video device can be a computer screen or screens, TV, projector and screen or small display on hand held games. In addition to visual feedback, video games may utilize other systems to provide interaction and information to the player such as audio and an array of tactile peripherals, such as vibration or force feedback.

Computer games have been around for decades but their popularity has increased as the video presentation and depth of storytelling has dramatically improved, leading to more life-like and complex games. This has been made possible in part by the relentless improvement in hardware. You can now easily project a very realistic image on a 110 inch screen in your home theater or gaming room. Types of Gaming Platforms or Gaming Systems
The electronic systems used to play video games are known as platforms. These platforms are broad in range, from large computers to small handheld devices. Gaming platforms can be broken down as follows:

- Portables: PSP, Nintendo, DS, iPhone etc

Social aspects
The gaming population is much broader than the stereotypical male teenager. Gaming encompasses both males and females from 6 to 60. Video gaming has traditionally been a social experience. Most consoles have been shipped with two or four controller inputs. This can be a great way to engage in family time activities. A large amount of people also play video games with other people through the internet. Finally having a location in the basement where your child’s friends come over and play video games can be an alluring fact to again bring the children to play at your house where you can keep an eye on them and know they are safe.

Gaming can provide a way for the whole family to get together and play a game. Noted psychologist William Pollack, PhD stresses the importance of just doing activities with your children – gaming provides this venue.
In Steven Johnson's book, Everything Bad Is Good For You, he argues that video games in fact demand far more from a player than traditional board games. To experience the game, the player must first determine the objectives, as well as how to complete them. They must then learn the game controls and how the human-machine interface works. Video games are based upon the player navigating (and eventually mastering) a highly complex system with many variables. This requires a strong analytical ability, as well as flexibility and adaptability. He argues that the process of learning the boundaries, goals, and controls of a given game is often a highly demanding one that calls on many different areas of cognitive function.
