TV Viewing Distances
THE IDEAL MOUNTING POSITION FOR A TV HAS YOU LOOKING AT THE CENTER OF THE SCREEN WHEN VIEWING
At Bravo AV we recommend TVs based on delivering you a great viewing experience. We realize that the size TV we recommend may be in conflict with your aesthetic requirements and we are happy to install any size TV that you desire. Below is what THX, a world class AV certification company recommends.
If your HDTV is going in a living room with limited space, THX recommends the following:
- 35 inch class TV = 3.5 - 5 feet away
- 40 inch class TV = 4 - 6 feet away
- 50 inch class TV = 5 - 7.5 feet away
- 60 inch class TV = 6 - 9 feet way
It might seem that THX is recommending a very large screen size for your room. But, its important to note two things: 1) THX screen size recommendations are based on re-creating an immersive cinematic experience, and 2) the biggest complaint among TV buyers is that they wish they had bought a bigger set.
TV Mounting Height
Ideally you would mount a TV so that you were looking at the center of the TV screen. For many reasons this often is not practical. Typical furniture that could house AV gear has a top of cabinet height in the neighborhood of 26 30 inches. If we assume 4 to 6 inches of space before the bottom of the TV then the bottom of the TV ends up being 30 to 36 inches. We have found that most people are comfortable with the bottom of the TV 48 50 inches.
